Walk'n'Talks
It’s May, and things are growing, things are buzzing, things are blooming. Except us! We’re ‘stuck’ in too many ways these days. It affects our moods, our relationships, our productivity and our perspective. So let’s grab the chance to get outside and clear our heads. Want to join me for a Walk’n’Talk?
Walking, on so many levels, is just what we need. It allows some space and breeze that keeps us healthy and spread out. Movement and exercise is great for body, mind and spirit especially when the inside coping strategies have included baking, cooking and eating. And physiologically, our brains process thoughts, emotions and ideas differently when we’re moving. Even the movement that our eyes register as the landscape passes is helpful in allowing thoughts to arrive with more clarity, allowing critical perspective and allowing them to to drift away as new ones develop. So yes, walking is ideal for pondering, sorting and for coaching.
Walking with a friend or partner is soothing, safe and opens space between you. For tough conversations or difficult times, It doesn’t demand eye-contact or particular body connection that can be misread. Hands can be held gently reassuringly. Sometimes silence is easier because of the rhythm and movement as you walk. This makes listening easier too. And the energy expended and the pace we settle into makes room for moments we’re flustered or surprised - in our movements, we can manage energy more easily, letting moments flow past into the next awareness.
And for coaching, with a cellphone, we can book a time, then grab your headphones, and call me. Let’s use the benefits of walking and pondering for good progress. Rather than wasting time on small talk, let’s get straight into it - what’s on your mind? Or what’s feeling distant? Coaching is about making the most of the time, with focused and intentional work, someone listening to what matters most, and letting the fluff drift out of the way. Let people wonder what you’re going on about - they’ll see that something is happening. And you’ll return home with a spring in your step.
